Project Overview: Knockdown Rebuild – Coastal Modern Home

Nestled in the relaxed coastal landscape of Rye on the Mornington Peninsula, this knockdown rebuild project replaces an outdated beach shack with a refined, architecturally considered family home. Designed to respond to both the laid-back character of the locale and the site’s natural features, the new residence reimagines coastal living through a modern, sustainable lens.

The architectural response prioritises light, privacy, and flexibility—framing curated views of the surrounding tea trees while shielding the interiors from prevailing winds and summer glare. A restrained material palette of timber, textured render, and natural stone grounds the home in its environment, allowing it to settle comfortably within the dune landscape.

Internally, the layout is zoned for multigenerational living, featuring open-plan communal spaces, a private upper-level retreat, and seamless transitions to generous outdoor terraces and a plunge pool. Large sliding doors and operable louvres promote passive cooling, while high-performance glazing and solar integration ensure long-term energy efficiency.

Balancing minimalist form with practical coastal resilience, this home is designed for barefoot living, long summer lunches, and the evolving needs of a modern family seeking retreat and reconnection by the sea.
